“Aireys Inlet”
We have shown the beautiful town of Aireys Inlet and the Split Point Lighthouse before in our print “Round The Twist“. This shot shows more of the community with the houses dotted along the dirt roads that can be found off the main Great Ocean Road. In the distance is Anglesea and Bells Beach. Aireys is about 90 minutes out of Melbourne and is a great holiday destination for many Victorians, as is the entire area along the coast. Aireys hosts the beautiful Split Point Lighthouse which was built in 1891. Tours of the iconic lighthouse are available here. “Golden Hour”
Getting up to capture the sunrise is never a hassle for us and we are most often rewarded with wonderful colours. The morning of this shoot we captured beautiful reds and pinks down at thirteenth beach as you can see in our shots “Dawn Patrol“, “Morning” and “The Bluff” all taken on the same glorious morning. A little later we travelled down the road and quickly flew the drone again at Barwon Heads, capturing these more golden colours about an hour after the sun had risen. The shot is pointing away from Barwon Heads and towards Ocean Grove. “Surf Coast”
Summer time. The season thousands flock to the Surf Coast around Torquay and surrounding areas. We visit the area ourselves all year round, not just for photographic trips but for walks, swims, forest exploration and more. The area draws us back as we love how the forest meets the beach in some spots and is only about 75 minutes from our base in Williamstown. This shot, taken at sunset in December shows the RACV resort behind Rocky Point. You can see many other shots from around the surf coast and Torquay here. “Backwash”
We never get tired of taking photos of waves, particularly where the waves meet the land. Drone top down shots are one of our favourite ways to capture this natural power and beauty. No two shots are ever the same and the colours and patterns continue to amaze us each time we get home to edit the shots. This shot was taken on the surf coast at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road near Torquay. “Dawn Patrol”
Dawn patrol is most often a surfers term, but is also used by swimmers and others. It refers to getting up bright and early at or before dawn for a surf, ocean water swim or whatever else. We like to use it ourselves when we are doing a shoot with either the drone or digital camera capturing the morning colours. This day was particularly brilliant and swimmers and surfers also caught these wonderful colours over ‘The Bluff‘ at Barwon Heads from Thirteenth Beach. It is so worth getting up early on a regular basis and watching nature take control of the day. It has a very inspiring feel to it and certainly gets you going for the day. If you haven’t risen early recently, take a chance and go somewhere where you can soak up nature, you won’t regret it! “Point Lonsdale Pier”
Recently we slept over in Point Lonsdale with a particular mission to capture the sunrise and sunset. This shot of the pier was taken at sunrise, looking East towards Point Nepean on the other side of the heads, down the Point Lonsdale Pier. One sole fisherman was braving the extremely windy conditions, but like us, he didn’t care and just went on about his business. All the container ships and cruise liners that end up in Port Melbourne drive through this stretch of water and so you’d find it hard to visit without seeing some sort of boat craft exploring the ocean. Swimming across the RIP here has been one of my greatest achievements to date! Point Lonsdale, another great Victorian destination! “Coastal”
Down the Mornington Peninsula towards Portsea are a few towns that have great views on both sides of the Peninsula. Blairgowrie is one of these small towns. On the West side is a lovely bay beach with bathing boxes, whilst on the East side is the more rugged ocean beach where many a photographer will head to catch the interesting rock formations. After finding ourselves at the top of a sand dune/cliff top late in the day, we just had enough time to set up the equipment and grad a few shots. This shot was taken at sunset facing away from the sun and soaking up the beautiful relaxing colours on the reverse side. “My Island Home”
The Great Ocean Road is full of wonder. Recently we drove from Melbourne to Wye River along this magnificent road and enjoyed stopping frequently for photographic shoots. This shot was taken at Aireys inlet where you will also find the Split Point Lighthouse. Taken soon after dawn on a very quiet morning, this little island or rocky outcrop just off the beach was glistening in the water. We love how the colours are split between the lighter shallow waters and the darker, deeper waters. It’s very Australian and seemed to fit beautifully will the very Australian title, ‘My Island Home”. “Wye River”
Recently we drove down the gorgeous Great Ocean Road. We passed through Lorne and continued on to Wye River, a small coastal town about 2.5 hours out of the city of Melbourne. It’s a great trip, given time as you can explore Geelong, Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne and many other seaside spots during the journey. We would actually recommend allowing several days to explore this section of the Great Ocean Road as there is so much to see and do. Wye River only has a population of around 70 but of course in the holiday seasons this grows dramatically. The Great Ocean Road was officially opened in 1932. “Barwon Bridge”
The beautiful seaside towns of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove are connected by the gorgeous Barwon Bridge. As you drive or walk over the bridge you get to take in views of the towns, the Barwon River and The Bluff. The bridge is the only crossing of the Barwon River between Geelong and the coast at this point. The river itself starts in the Otways and winds it way down to the beach here over 160 kilometres. The bridge was originally built in 1926/27 but was completely renewed in 2009/10. It includes a separate bridge for pedestrians, so is actually made up of two separate structures.
